Last year, I had the honor of helping my client create motion graphics for his business needs. I'll break down the high-level aspects of this design to my specific role in it, but before we go any further, please take a look at the final design and animation—
About the project
This project was a project that I worked on for a client, they needed motion graphic elements for their business needs. According to the brief he conveyed, they wanted animation related to banking and the world of bitcoin as it is today, they wanted the world of bitcoin or crypto to be sustainable and become the foundation for the development of the world at some point.
Think Marvel —the heroes are our features. Each character have his/her own movie, but we haven’t brought them all together yet. It’s time to have their own “Avengers” movie, and that’s what this product page is all about.
My role
My focus was on the animation and motion parts. I collaborated closely with another designer, to make sure our vision was aligned. Once we both signed-off on the animations, I then worked closely with the developer, to make sure that the export process from After Effects to Lottie was seamless².
Motion Design Goals
I had two simple goals for this project, in terms of motion design:
1. design according to the brief and depicting the sustainability of bitcoin and crypto
2. Give a little extra excitement to our audience through non-monotonous movements
Both may seem obvious, but there is a bit of a balance to achieving both well. Take the animation below, which is the final asset for our App Tracking Protection—
What the final animation looks like. Note that the “bank” element dominates the motion, and there is a static movement that depicts continuity.
One of the initial experiments we tried was animating all the elements on the screen — including the floating coin element.
Although each element works independently when animated, when combined, the results are too overwhelming. It's hard to focus on just one element, let alone the larger message we want to convey. In other words, by trying to make both assets fun, the understanding aspect—which is more important—
Workflow
The original designs were done in adobe illustrator cc.
For assets that were heavy on photography (or static), I exported them out as PNG’s.
Everything else (like vectors) were transferred to After Effects via AEUX.
Each animation has its own comp, and are exported as mp4’s and shared with the stakeholders via Asana.
Meanwhile, I’ve created — and would continue to update—what animation , as the user expectations.
Once animations are finalized, I would export as gif, and would begin the debugging process.
